Product Description:
Does a GPS watch have to be hard to use? Or make you look like Inspector Gadget? Not any more. The Garmin Forerunner 110 is breakthrough GPS watch with heart rate monitor technology from Garmin. The Forerunner 110 has 4 buttons (like many of the more advanced heart rate monitors without GPS) and user-friendly prompts on an easy-to-see backlit screen. It does all of the basics and it does them well.
In many ways the Forerunner 110 is step beyond the previous generation Garmin GPS watches (like the 305, 305XT and the 405). It’s smaller, much faster acquiring satellites, and much more reliable. However, it’s also scaled down significantly to make the watch easier to use. As a result, the Forerunner 110 doesn’t have a lot of advanced running features.
The Forerunner 110 is available in 3 different options:
- The black Forerunner 110 does not include the heart rate monitor.
- The Men’s Forerunner 110 (black/red) with the standard heart rate monitor
- The Women’s Forerunner 110 (pink) with the standard heart rate monitor
If you buy the black Forerunner 110 (or you need a replacement heart rate monitor) you can still purchase the ANT+ heart rate monitor separately. Choose either the standard Garmin heart rate monitor or go for the premium soft-strap Garmin heart rate monitor.
The Forerunner 110 does have a few downsides. Keep reading to see if the Garmin Forerunner 110 is the right GPS heart rate monitor watch for you.

What we like the most about the Garmin Forerunner 110:
- The Garmin Forerunner 110 has a great set of features for a beginning runner. The best part, however, is the size. You don’t have to look like Inspector Gadget when you are wearing a GPS watch and the Garmin Forerunner 110 proves it.
- The Forerunner 110 has a reliable way (via USB) to upload the workout information to Garmin Connect- the online community of Garmin users. Once you upload your data there are convenient ways to see your workout on a map with charts of elevation, speed, and heart rate. There is even a way to playback your workout watching all of your data. Best of all- it’s free.
- The new GPS chip in the Forerunner 110 is fast. Really fast. Locking onto the satellites with older GPS watches used to take while. With the Forerunner 110 it takes less than 30 seconds to find the satellites. Usually a lot less.
- The AutoLap feature will automatically create a new lap at a specified distance. It’s a cool feature but you can’t see where you are in the current lap.
What we don’t like about the Garmin Forerunner 110:
- The Garmin Forerunner 110 is missing a way to display your instant pace. They left this off the Garmin 110 because GPS-based pace (or speed) can be a little noisy- pace can vary a lot and be very confusing. In order to combat the noisy measurements, they only provided lap average and overall average. A longer average allows them to smooth over the bumpiness of a noisy measurement. For some people, this is a deal breaker because you can’t see how fast you going right now.
- You cannot review your lap times on the watch- you have to upload your data to your computer or the web. You can review the basics of your workout on the watch- just not lap details.
- It’s not waterproof. Some users have even reported having issues in rain or heavy sweat. This isn’t a common report but you certainly can’t wear it swimming. Sorry triathletes.
Update: Check out our Garmin Forerunner 210 review. The Garmin 210 adds several features and it’s currently available for the same price.

I'm in love
I have the Garmin 405. It's OK but it's big and a pain to use. The Garmin 110 does everything my Garmin 405 does but it's way smaller, and lighter. The 110 also has the latest GPS chip. That means faster and more reliable satellite communications.
There is no better value
This GPS watch is awesome and it's worth every penny. The best part is downloading (uploading?) the data to Garmin Connect. The clip is easy and the USB makes it easy. Once you look at the data online you get a Google map of where you ran. That's a real charge and make me run farther every time. If you are thinking about buying the 110, go for it. There is no better value on GPS watches.
Worth it
This watch is worth a few extra bucks. It's easy to use. No extra buttons. No complicated menus. No fiddling with the watch- just start it and run. You get distance, time and pace. I don't need instant pace- the average is fine. Don't worry about having instant pace.
Aweful
It doesn't show you the lap distance. That's the first issue. If you want to do interval training on the road (not on a track), that makes it hard.
After a while, the 110 goes into power saving mode. At the last race, I couldn't start the watch because it was in power saving mode. What's the point in having a watch I can't use in the race!
